GRAND OLE OPRY GRAND OLE OPRY began in Nashville [1], Tennessee [2], in November 1925 as weekly radio broadcasts playing old time, or hillbilly (later called country and western), music from the fifth floor of the National Life and Accident Insurance Company building. The Grand Ole Opry moved 10 miles northeast of Nashville from the smaller (2,362) Ryman to this 4,400 seat venue as the 6th Opry location in 1974. It is wedged in between the Gaylord Resort and Convention Center, the Opry Mills Mall, and the edge of a major highway and though nice just doesn't have the historic character or location of the Ryman.
